The Awe That Changes Our Lives
'To cultivate the fear of God, as God's people should for his glory, let's analyze it further. Is this fear of God in a mix of various emotions, or is it an attitude? Emotions are feelings that come and go, depending on external stimuli, while an attitude is more or less a settled state of mind. Into which category does fearing God belong?

The answer is both. Feelings of awe, reverence, honor, and adoration will definitely be stimulated within us as we have great thoughts about God, as we encounter his majestic splendor, holiness, and love. Whether we think of a complex set of emotions or an attitude, the important thing is that this mix is to be determinative. The emotions and attitudes should determine the way we relate to God, the way we obey him, trust him, and worship him. Properly fearing God is more than just a feeling or an attitude. It's a feeling or attitude that changes our lives.

Without this proper fear, for example, our view of God may tend toward the servile or slavish type of fear, and our obedience will be somewhat reluctant and driven by more of the fear of consequences rather than by a desire to please a loving Father. On the other hand, if our approach to God lacks the proper dimension of awe that has regard to his majesty, splendor, power, and dignity, we'll tend to be overly familiar with God and lacking in reverence toward him. So, the right fear of God is not just a concept to be entertained in our minds. Rather, it's an invigorating and guiding principle that deeply affects every area of our lives and determines the way we live.'*
